In the studio

I work in a well-equipped 2,000 square foot studio on the ground floor of my home. I use stoneware, white stoneware, and translucent porcelain clays for my work. Most of my pieces are fired to cone 10 in my 16 cubic foot gas kiln, but I am now also firing some soluble salt work to cone 6 in an electric kiln. Over the years, I have experimented constantly with new glazes, materials, and decorating techniques, gradually incorporating anything interesting into my regular work. After making the decision in 2003 to devote more time to the investigation and use of water-soluble metal colorants, I have also begun to give a series of workshops in my studio each year in the spring and early summer — usually one dealing with solubles, and two or three others dealing with either throwing, glazes, or various decorating techniques.
